Griya Seni Ekalaya is a home for the study of Javanese gamelan, wayang, dance, and language in Solo (Surakarta), Central Java. Individual learners and visiting groups can shape their studies around their interests, experience, and available time.
The name Ékalaya comes from the story of a prince from a foreign land who wants to study archery with the renowned teacher Durna. Rejected because he does not belong to the Pandhawa or Kurawa lineage, he retreats to the forest, makes a clay likeness of Durna, and practises before it. Through dedication and imagination, he becomes an expert.
Our arts centre takes inspiration from Ékalaya’s drive, dedication, initiative, and discipline as a student in a foreign land. It is this spirit of learning that brings our community together.
Our teaching staff is directed by master musician Bp. Wakidi Dwidjomartono. Dr. Kathryn “Kitsie” Emerson coordinates curriculum and scheduling, translation, and the cultural bridging that helps visitors connect with Javanese performing arts.
Individuals can study for any length of time and at any ability level. We also welcome visiting gamelan groups who want to develop their ensemble skills, explore wayang accompaniment, or focus on particular instruments and musical forms.
The original Ekalaya website records a launching performance in September 2017: Ki Purbo Asmoro performed Dewi Sri, preceded by a painting installation performance by Ki Gamblang. The performance honoured the neighbouring rice field as a symbolic kula nuwun — an introduction to the neighbourhood.
The Ekalaya logo was created by Ki Gamblang in 2020.
